I am not dating a black man, and I feel less guilty about it each day. Sometimes the smallest of encounters remind me that love should not be bound by rules, and definitely not by race. It’s not that I am not happy in my current relationship. Rather, I am torn between the progressiveness I naturally pursue and the regressive nature of a society that still makes me feel “less black” for dating a white man.

I started to starve myself in middle school, hoping the curves and the menstrual bleeding would disappear. Eventually I learned to swallow the bitter pill NaughtyDate account settings and repress the discomfort. Or, as this TikTok user points out, we may insist that fat people are beautiful while our actual dating patterns say otherwise. Even how we form platonic friendships or professional relationships says otherwise. After centuries of being forced into the margins, to be Black, femme, and powerful today is a revolutionary act. And it’s through the strength of our community that we’re not only able to fight the good fight side by side, but rest our bones together when that fight takes everything out of us. For me, this community takes many forms, but as I reflected on how I’d like to celebrate Black History Month, it was my friendships that came to the forefront.
